We just want to take your temperature

Look at this video blog. He talked about how China treat possible swine flu.
0.5 degree Celsius higher than average body temperature = doctor in bio-hazard suit and ambulance

It's a swine flu!......Not

My family, except me, along with my uncle's family are currently on vacation in China. Yesterday, my aunt got caught in the rain and came with a flu. The gang went to a hospital to get her a medicine.

Well, and everything went pretty serious. Doctors, in bio-hazard suits, were called to check their temperature, and there were police outside the hospital preventing them from leaving.

Yeah, I got a text message from my mum at 2 am last night. Not something to know when you are about to go to sleep.

But anyway, everything's clear now and they were let go. Guess China has learned its lesson from its past mistake in keeping SARS from the outside world which is why it spread rapidly to other countries. Yup, that was the time of panic, uncertainty and distrust. Well, that applies to now too.

Beware of swine flu guys!

Business Process Experience

Throughout the training, we covered many activities. I'll list the notable takeaway from the training.

Day 1, the topic is on order to cash. In 1 of the activities, we have to act a role as an audit/consultant who are going to interview a tough and annoyed client by asking him relevant question to address some issue. The facilitator actually played his role really well (he should be an actor!) Despite being a small voice in the group, I've managed to uncover the biggest issue, fraud. It was kinda interesting as we uncovered more red-flags, our discussion get pretty aggressive and was noted as "annoying".

Day 2, Inventory and Production management, we have an interesting activity in overseeing the whole operation with LEGO. First, we have to decide on the # of LEGO cars that we will produce within 10 mins & received the raw materials, with consideration of storing cost (penalty), raw material cost and etc. Throughout the production, we were stopped twice to pick cards that showed how external events can affect the process. In the end, we managed to build the 2nd most cars (8 completed and 2 WIP, but won the competition as we got lucky from the cards ($$), and we managed to work on all the raw materials and incurred the less storing cost.

Day 3-4, we were told that we have to implement all we have learned and addressed the issue given in a 10 mins presentation. We have to came out with a business proposal and try to sell it to a real PARTNER. It was pretty intimidating, but I think we did well, mainly because someone from my team really KICKED ASS. Given that he's only 2nd year and that knowledgeable, really makes me feel awed on some of the talented professionals in our firm.

4 days training @ Princeton

I've attended the 4 days training at Princeton, NJ from June 15-18. I was expecting the training to be much fun. After all, we get free lodging and meal at Marriott hotel. The training is designed to be partly lecture and group discussion, projects and presentations.

Anyway, here are some of the pictures of the hotel.

Cheap lens for sale?

After rescuing my laptop from the wretched station, I went to meet my college friend for dinner. We arranged to meet at 7. I arrived at 6.30 but she only arrived at 7.30. Girl~

So while waiting, I walked around aimlessly and decided to check out the nearby camera store, Digital Express International Electronics Inc around 36W 35th st.
At first, I was just looking for a diffuser as it's harmless to buy diffuser in any store. It's cheaper and there's no need to worry for the grey market and used products. Apparently they carry it. So I just randomly asked whether they have this lens that I'm looking for.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm currently looking for Nikon 18-55mm VR Lens. That's the most basic lens that a person could have for Nikon SLR and I guess it's sufficient for my need. I don't need telephoto as i take landscape/objects mostly and it's sharp enough.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The guy is going to sell it for me for 120, retail for around 200. He claimed that it's new, USA model and he assured me that I have no problem with the warranty registration. His story is that somebody just bought the whole d80 kit, didn't want the kit lenses, and ordered a 1600 mm lens from him. The customer then gave the kits lenses to him (who's that stupid person?). The price is very cheap even if it's used.

Being an Auditor, I kept on drilling more information from him that he became rude. Then I noticed that there's fingerprint on the lens and he wanted to clean it with his shirt. Yup. What kind of sales rep will clean lens using his own shirt? That will scratch the lens (possibly)! And he keep on saying that even if I don't want it, someone is going to come tomorrow to buy it at 180 (either he's stupid or he tell lousy excuses). And the most important thing is...they claimed that there's no Nikon camera body to test the lens cause they have "Just-In-Time" inventory system. There's also no return but exchange policy (sounds like a bait-n-switch scheme).

Long story short, the whole thing is too shady, rude sale representative and doesn't seem to know much about camera. He first introduced himself as someone knowledgeable about camera (cause he's 45) and mocked me because I'm young but he gave the wrong price of the other lens, which was then corrected by his friend (and yeah, I do know that market price for that lens). So in the end, I pretended that I was going out to get cash (yeah, they are trying to avoid taxation but still charge me tax on it) and never returned.

Cable Lock

Yesterday, I forgot my keys. So anyway, what does that means without my key?

1) I had to woke my housemate to open the door. Yeah, she slept like a pig.
2) I came to work like usual and performed the usual work practices at the start of the day.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What work practices?
Because of the nature of our work (mobile workers), we don't have our own cubicles. And that means we are like 21st century nomads, geared with our laptops. To protect the information and prevent thefts, we are instructed to lock up our laptops wherever we are, especially in client's site.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, when I was about to head home, I realized that I can't unlock my laptop! Holy molly. Then I had these thoughts that I have to leave it in the office, someone going to steal it, get the data, sell the data and then we got sued. Yeah, I have huge imagination.

But luckily, I realized that I've my cablelock on the station that's kinda..broken! And so, I just have to yank it hard and it came out effortlessly. Even though it defeated the purpose of keeping my laptop secured, I am glad I did that. And below is a picture of it, when I brought it home.

Shoe

I've had this pair of shoes for sometime, god knows when, and it's kinda messy. Actually, I don't know what I did other than walking, that it disfigured the inside so bad. Check it out.

It get's kinda uncomfortable especially inside, so I decided to invest $15 on Dr Scholl's Messanging Gel. And I still don't know why, but I screwed those within a month.

Having them for the first few days was fine. Comfortable to my feet. But somehow, it kept on slipping. Maybe I walked too fast and the traction is not strong enough? Who knows. All I know that it get messed up now and it's uncomfortable to wore them.

So I began to look for my replacement shoes and bought 2 pairs. Both are from Kenneth Cole and roughly have the same design. The only difference is the price (one pair is 1/2 of the other), the strap, quality and the "touch". I like both of them but I knew that I just need 1 of them (I'm very loyal). And so, it took me almost a month before I made my decision. Well, not exactly one month as I did put this issue aside for sometime. And yes, I still wore the old crazy stuff during that 1 month.

Voila, here's my new shoe.

I liked the design, especially the strap which makes it exquisite. But I just could not fathom on its plasticy look, even though it is made of leather. So I went around asking people for their opinions. Yup, for almost a month, before I finally decided on it.

I wore this shoes for the first time today and I was shocked at how fast the leather soles wore out. Yup, it's subject to wear and tear too. So, after work, I went to get some sole protector (even though it's protecting the rubber portion). Will that help? I've no idea. But since it's a cheap investment, I just went along with it and ignored the fact that it looked like a bubble gum sticking on the soles.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Updated on June 12.

After less than a day of usage, the "bubble gum' failed miserably. And I can't be bothered to stick it again or buy a replacement. Perhaps, cause I re-stick it and blbalba..Who knows? But..that's 3M for you.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Overall, I gave it a 8/10 score on B-est rating scale. -1 for the plasticy touch and -1 because of the wreckage it had after 1 day of usage (see below for detail). Not that it's inevitable, but the fact that it's more visible than others due to its plasticy look.

Currently, I only have black polish, Rain/Stain Guard and Leather Cleaner for my shoe. But of course, to keep the condition of the shoe, I need to get leather cream and cedar shoe trees to protect the leather. And that's in my b-est shopping list.

Interested on the shoe? You can get one at here . The cost has dropped to $120. A reasonable price for a shoe.

Kidrobot

Let me now blogged on my recent visit to Kidrobot @ Soho, NYC, where I was enticed by the window display, as you can see below.

Kidrobot is founded by Paul Budnitz in 2002 and is "the world’s premier designer and retailer of limited edition art toys and apparel". These toys are indeed limited, and the price can range from $6 to $20,000. That's insanely costly for a toy! Well, since they have stores in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Miami, I guess there's a market for the rich people out there.

See the last picture? Oh yes, $90 for that ? Tsktsk.

Overview
First, let me give an overview of what I'm going to cover in my blog.
It will be random posts that I would like to share with all. You can bet it's going to be something fun/interesting/silly/important facts. I might be updating more than once, so check back for updates.

Analyze this
So let's begin with my actual post with a serious note by giving some interesting facts of a career in accounting (really? is there any?), and clear up some of the misconceptions of us with accounting degree.

So what can you do with an accounting degree? Many.

Many people think that studying accounting is boring. And guess what, it's TRUE! However, it can be versatile and exciting, but that depends on your job. Let's cover both sides.

Boring
From my experience and understanding, working as an accountant could be boring.

Why?
Cause you are doing the same thing over and over again. For example, working in the account payable and account receivable, you cannot work on other job functions as you could compromise the internal controls and commit fraud.

Isn't it the same thing as other jobs? Yes, but well, it's accounting.

Exciting
That happens if you are in public accounting, especially if you are in Big4. The Big 4 are simply the 4 largest accounting firms with partnerships around the world. With accounting, you can work in audit, forensic accounting, consulting (business process & internal control etc), financial advisory and so on.

Isn't it the same? Well, the difference is that you could be exposed in different industries, tasks, teams and location. That means we don't have our own cubicles.

So where do we work? At the office, just that we have to make RESERVATION! See below for screenshot. (edited).

How do we get assign? That depends on the needs, availability and the expertise of the individual. We are then selected by the manager/resource manager.
Sounds like fun, isn't it?

Okay, peace out for now. Attending conference call now.
